Sesame Oil and Seeds

Sesame Street meets Sesame COOKIE!

Sesame seed oil is often used in Asian cooking to add flavoring. Sesame seeds, either toasted or raw, add crunch and a subtle, nutty flavor to food.

Studies have shown that sesamin, an ingredient found in sesame oil, can inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors and an also lower cholesterol. Recently, sesamin has been shown to recycle vitamin E, making it an antioxidant booster. Sesamin also contains phytic acid, a potent antioxidant.

Sesame seeds and sesame oil are not only healthy but delicious. For a true phytochemical feast, sprinkle a few drops of sesame oil on lightly steamed vegetables, and top with sauteed sesame seeds.
